Cap City Corridor Project

  • Objective: The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in cooperation with the City of Sacramento, Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Sacramento County, Sacramento Regional Transit, and Sacramento Transportation Authority proposes to make improvements on SR 51/Cap City between post miles 1.0 to 4.4 in Sacramento County including widening of the I-80 bridge.
  • Description: The proposed project would widen the existing roadway, extend the existing bus/carpool lanes, construct auxiliary lanes, improve intelligent transportation system elements, construct a new Class I bike path on the American River Bridge, and widen or replace existing structures within the project limits.
  • Impact: The main impacts River Park include (1) the likelihood of the sound wall behind some of the homes on Erlewine Circle moving closer, (2) the addition of a bike/pedestrian path on the bridge going over the American River connecting the CalExpo side to the River Park side, and (3) construction noise during the project.
  • Update November 2022: (1) The pile driving activity causing the loud bangs is now complete; noise for the remainder of the project should be lower, (2) work related to moving the sound wall will begin soon with removal of the existing sound wall in the Spring, and (3) one of the contractors will be accessing the site through Glenn Hall.
  • Duration: Construction related to the bridge widening is expected to occur between 2021-22 while other elements of the CapCity Corridor project are expected to occur in the 2024-25 timeframe.

  • Update November 2022: The design changed such that the paved trail will no longer go under the railroad [creating a gap in the trail], and the paved trail will be wider than originally planned [10-12ft], narrowing the unpaved shoulder to ~2ft.
  • Work Area: This portion of the Trail runs along the American River levee from the H Street Bridge to Interstate 80.
